Thank you for addressing this. Unfortunately, the attacks will only increase now. Take it from someone else who is routinely attacked for pointing out that none of the groups white rural conservatives love to hate are responsible for their situations.

Basically you are greedy unpatriotic atheists who destroyed America.

That's why we hate you. Not because of all the brown skinned people, or Jews, or anything else. We're not so stupid as you think and we know you think we're stupid. Oh, and we make up an outsized proportion of the military. Just like that other rural group: Indians. And yeah, I'm an authoritarian. You don't like it, but the fact is people, including You, dear reader, are tribal. Exceptionally their social instinct surmounts tribalism: exceptionally. Greedy. Opportunistic. Liberal. Fuckheads. Now go play GOLF.

I'm curious about your thoughts on a question I've long pondered but have no direct evidence for. Are the "rural white" Trump acolytes self-selecting in a sense? I did not grow up in a rural area--I'm about as suburban as one could be. It seems to me, though, that the people I've known who did grow up there follow (in greatly over generalized terms) one of two patterns: embracing that culture or rejecting it. Those who embrace it do not go to private universities in Boston or New York or San Francisco. They either do not seek higher education, or they attend state universities in smaller communities like Ames or Greeley or Manhattan (KS, not the other one). After graduation, they return to rural America and take their place in their communities. Rural America would be hurting even more without these returnees, and there are innumerable good reasons to follow this path--but it seems to appeal more to those who see rural life as being truer or purer or better than city life. Those who reject that culture leave but do not return. They may not hate their roots, but by their choices they encounter more cultures, more diversity, more ideas, more options, and often more opportunities than their returnee cousins. They may not be "liberal" per se, but they are usually less reactionary by necessity.

Wow, those Atlantic and Politico guys are completely unhinged with the epithets, straw man attacks against you, and just shear cover for the actual underlying problem in rural white America.

I grew up in rural white America in a small town in western PA in the 60's and 70's. Racism directed towards black and brown people was rampant. My parents whom were loving and caring were racist along with many of my relatives. Poverty was rampant as well and many were supported by government programs. Do not try to tell any of these people that you are going to take away there Medicare, Social security or Medicaid. I believe their support of Trump is connected to racism but he also gives them a voice. Even today Biden and Harris continue to ignore rural America. When was the last time you heard them speak in Altoona or Johnstown PA?

Just yesterday, I entered one of those random convos going on out front of a business I had just shopped in, here in my new digs, Lakeport CA. There were about four or five people a couple of women three men various ages from 35 on up to 70. And all were “government haters.” I just flat out told them that they were wrong for hating their government, reminding them that our government has helped me since 1996 when I became fully disabled at the young age of 42. I told them it was wrong to hate the government of their own country, and that they were just repeating old Reagan talking points that were full of crap.

Got in my car, went to back up and almost hit another driver! That’ll learn me!

I just can’t help it, I get so hotheaded around around MAGA nutbags. And worthy of note … I left home yesterday thinking the man next-door had taken his Nazi 2024 flag down finally, only to return home after that altercation, to find it flying freely out front, once more. It had just wrapped itself all up around the pole, and I should’ve kept my mouth shut to the helper that helps the two people next-door, who are so incapacitated they can’t take care of themselves any longer. But oh, they can buy the fucking Trump flag.

I remember my late-husband’s father got to that stage when he was 74 or so, and we were the ones that had to clean up the toxic waste left behind in that one bedroom apartment, where they shat themselves daily. It was a goddamned biohazard.

Biohazard. Trump is a biohazard. And so are his fucking fucked up supporters.

Would love to see a written conversation/discussion/debate with these authors and Les Leopold. Just read his interview with Matt Tahibi on his new book “Wall Street’s War on Workers” and it seems like there could be a great opportunity for some consensus and constructive disagreement on something that seems contentious.
